Carmen Keyhole Scarf

November 13, 2004

Electra, Miranda, or Sandiego

Last Thursday I went to Yarn Forward to get the circular needles I needed to put the eyelash trim on Velvet Oblivion. And you know I didn't get out there with just a measly set of circs. I did my usual tour of the store, fondling and checking prices and looking through pattern books. In an effort to limit my expenditures (which also included a copy of Vogue Scarves Two ...) I decided on two balls of a new Patons eyelash yarn called Carmen in the colour Steel.

I'm not a big eyelash girl. I use it as trim here and there, and I made a scarf and hat with Bernat Boa for my sister Joey. (I love the names of the Boa colours, by the way. They're all named after birds. The gray/blue for Velvet Oblivion is called Swan.) But the Carmen was so soft. And I liked the white and beige and black bits in it. And I wanted to make a keyhole scarf. So I did.

Using 6.5 mm bamboo circs, I cast on 26 stitches and knit garter stitch for 6". I split for the keyhole by joining another ball halfway through the row, and knit the two sides separately for 2". Then I joined up the two sides and continued knitting in garter stitch until I ran out of yarn. The whole scarf is about 30" long.

I started this scarf Thursday night, and finished it up Monday. I'd pick it up on the weekend in between writing bouts on my NaNoWriMo novel, and it was very enjoyable to have something so soft and quick in my hands.

And how lucky am I to have a photographer in the house? Shawn did a lovely job with this shoot, if I do say so myself. Carmen bonus: the best shot is at Shawn's flickr account.
