Notes

I have a bagful of Mission Falls 1824 Cotton oddballs left over from two versions of Danny's Sweater that I made several years ago. So when I needed a baby gift, I naturally turned to the matching Danny's Hat and pulled it together in an evening.

Successes

  • I-cord topper: Love the little knotted sprig of I-cord that finishes the top of the hat.
  • Speed: I made the six-month size in about an hour. Great for those sudden baby showers.
  • Colour: Great fun was had weeding through my ten colours of 1824 Cotton and finding a nice unisex colour scheme.

Revisions

  • Yarn going bye-bye: I got the down-low from a friend last night that Mission Falls is discontinuing production of the 1824 Cotton, possibly for good. Scoped out this discussion on Knitters' Review that explains what's happening and suggesting alternate yarns. I agree that 1824 Cotton is not the easiest yarn to knit with--I find it causes more pain in my hands than any other yarn, perhaps because it has so little give. But I also think the finished product looks great and wears well, especially for kids' clothes. So I'll miss it (but won't be stocking up, cause of my YNBA!).
  • Metal 4 mm DPNs: These things are fit for the pit. Heavy, sticky, awkward, ladder-creating ... I'm trading mine in for DPNs of the bamboo variety, since I have enough yarn for several more Danny's Hats.
